The British Cemetery 1700-2020

This is the title of a book on which the authors have worked since 2018, and which will be published at the end of April 2026. Both authors have been involved for decades with the study and conservation of cemeteries, and with English Heritage/Historic England as staff or committee members. Hitherto, despite increasing academic interest, and the proliferation of Friends’ associations devoted to particular cemeteries, many of them producing significant new research, there has no comprehensive study of the history of the British cemetery. This new book tells the story of cemeteries from the introduction of burial places separate from churchyards, through the rise of non-denominational cemeteries in the 19th century, up to the modern age of cremation and woodland burials. It is the first history to take the development of cemetery landscapes as an organising principle, and the first of offer a history of cemetery infrastructure (e.g. roads, drainage, public conveniences). Whereas most of the best work on cemetery history in Britain has concentrated on the biographical or business history of particular cemeteries, this book concentrates on design and form, whether in sculpture, architecture, or landscape design, and it treats the 20th century as thoroughly as the 19th. This talk will explain the research methods, and present some of the discoveries the authors have made.
