ASCE was established in Bologna in 2001, and is a network of public and private organisations that own and manage cemeteries considered to be of historical or artistic importance. The Association is strongly focussed on interpretation and tourism and has links with the European Institute of Cultural Routes. ASCE promotes the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries (WDEC) at the end of May each year, when member cemeteries hold events to raise the awareness of the cultural importance of cemeteries. The website lists an extended programme of guided tours, exhibitions, concerts and other events. ASCE holds an annual conference that includes presentations and cemetery tours.
