Fredrik Berg (b. 1987) is a PhD candidate (2023–) at the University of Oslo’s Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas. His research project centres on the architectural history of Norwegian crematoria in the twentieth century, focusing on the ideas, organizations, individuals, architects, and networks that influenced their planning and design. He is especially interested in how architectural competitions can be used to nuance how the notion of crematoria architecture has been interpreted and perceived in both professional and public discourse.
Berg holds a degree in integrated conservation from Uppsala University in Sweden. From 2015 to 2023, he has worked at the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) as a heritage consultant and building conservator, specializing in the preservation and development of nineteenth- and twentieth-century historic structures, and modern funerary architecture in particular.
