My research focuses upon the history and heritage of Dublin Cemeteries Trust from the establishment of the Dublin Cemeteries Committee in 1828 until the present. Currently, my attention is on the early years of the Trust and the establishment of Goldenbridge Cemetery in 1828, prior to Catholic Emancipation and at a time of sectarian tension in Ireland, partially down to the attitudes of ultra-Protestants. This work allows us to see the wider context of the cemetery’s establishment as part of a movement of growing Catholic middle class confidence and participation in public life.
