I am a PhD student, using the information from grave markers located in all of the kirkyards and cemeteries in Mainland, Orkney from people who died between 1825-1925 to determine their places of death in relation to where they were buried or memorialized in Orkney. Orkney underwent a massive change in population during this time due to a variety of factors, such as emigration elsewhere. Using the data, I will locate death sites and create a GIS map using GPS coordinates for analytical purposes. Islanders still associated themselves with Orkney and memorial data is one way to reveal how strongly they maintained their ties and identities with Mainland. Identities can be identified at individual, parish, and community levels.
